Recent legislation surrounding women’s issues have returned to Congressional focus as the Presidential election draws nearer.  One of the key issues currently under discussion is the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would help to guarantee equal pay for women.  However, the bill failed a Senate vote on June 5, 2012.  Despite the failure to pass the bill, Congress and other groups are still trying to prioritize women’s issues.  President Obama stated, “Despite the progress that has been made over the years, women continue to earn substantially less than men for performing the same work. My Administration will continue to fight for a woman’s right for equal pay for equal work, as we rebuild our economy so that hard work pays off, responsibility is rewarded, and every American gets a fair shot to succeed.”  Another bill recently in the news is the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, which helps to provide funding for women’s shelters and other programs that enable women to seek help if they are victims of violence.  Both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed different versions of this bill after heavy discussion and debate.

Public debate about women’s issues continues and many people are split on bills that specifically target women.  Groups that support women’s rights and focus on women’s issues often argue that legislation is necessary to ensure that women are given the same opportunities as men.  However, other groups argue that these bills are discriminatory because they focus solely on women.  With the upcoming Presidential election, both Democrats and Republicans are working to win the coveted women’s vote, and many women are also looking to Congress to see which candidates best support their beliefs, and thus deserve their vote.

Discussion Questions

Do you think that laws that specifically address women’s issues are unfair?  Are these laws necessary to ensure equal rights for women?  Is there a better way to address women’s issues?
