如何定义美?(What is Beauty?)

Recently, People magazine released its 2012 issue of the world’s most beautiful people.  Topping the list was Beyoncé, the first time in nine years that a black woman has made it to the top of People’s ranking.  Although many of the magazine’s readers look forward to the yearly issue of most beautiful people, other people raise questions about the definition of beauty, and the standards used to judge “beautiful” women.

In the 22 year history of People’s most beautiful woman, black women only topped the list twice: Beyoncé in this year’s issue, and Halle Berry in 2003.  Furthermore, critics, such as Margot Magowan, have raised questions about why Beyoncé was portrayed as a blonde on the cover of People’s most beautiful woman issue.  Other critics agree that People’s selections often span a very narrow definition of beauty.  Linda Lowen writes, “People's ‘beautiful’ women tend to stay within a narrow range of size, shape, and color. If they flex those parameters, they do only so for women who are influential, powerful, or undeniably successful.”  The arguments regarding People’s selection of beautiful women also raise questions about why women of color or women with a few extra pounds must work even harder to gain recognition.  Adding fuel to the fire is the argument that People also sends mixed messages by accepting singer Adele for “embracing her curves” yet praising American Idol winner Jordan Sparks for becoming sexier after losing weight.

Digging deeper into this issue, I discovered that an Asian woman has never won the “most beautiful” title and Jennifer Lopez is the only Latina to have won the “award.”  At the same time, there have been several women to win the award multiple times: Julia Roberts has won the award four times.  Furthermore, a blog by Dodai Stewart reveals even more concerning issues regarding America’s definition of beauty.  Younger, more impressionable girls may learn that beauty comes in only certain sizes and colors.  Rather than emphasizing a narrow definition of beauty, a magazine like People should be helping readers to embrace different types of beauty.

Discussion Questions

What is beauty?  How does culture affect people’s view of beauty?  Are we (as a world) too focused on beauty in a superficial sense?  Do you think beauty sells?

讨论:美的定义是什么?文化如何影响人们对美的看法?世人是不是把外在美看得太重了?你是不是觉得长得美就特别吃香?
