留美女学生:改变国家和世界的力量(Women Studying in America: Changes for Their Country and the World) - 美国马尾妹 - 花旗国的半边天

她目前已经是孟买一所高校(the K.J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce)的讲师。在那里,阿巴给研究生传授的一切与空气质量监控,水质调控和土壤样品相关的知识,都是她在留学过程中所获得的。

A recent article about a young scientist from India, Elizabeth Abba, demonstrates the opportunities women have when they study abroad.  Abba, who studied at San Diego State University (SDSU) in 2008, used her research about air pollution, and the knowledge she gained through her time studying in the United States to help her own country to fight pollution.  She is currently a lecturer in Mumbai, at the K.J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce, where she teaches graduate students about monitoring air, water, and soil samples, all of which she learned while studying abroad.

Abba is not alone.  In the 2010 to 2011 academic year, there were more than 297,000 foreign graduate students studying in the United States.  Most of the students come from China and India, but students from across the globe are finding new approaches to their domestic problems through studying abroad.  Not only do foreign graduate students learn new techniques or methods for conducting and applying research back home, but they also learn about different cultures.  Furthermore, international graduate students are able to see themselves as part of a larger picture, and these students are able to collaborate with their colleagues from other countries to find global solutions to the world’s toughest issues.

Abba’s story demonstrates that women are taking the initiative to study abroad and are instrumental in helping to spread knowledge throughout the world.  Furthermore, she demonstrates that women are able to make strides in research and that foreign exchange students take home much more than practical knowledge in their field; they also take home and understanding of how this knowledge can help develop research and educational standards within their own countries.

Discussion Questions

Women like Elizabeth Abba learn many things while studying abroad.  Other than practical knowledge of their field, how can these women help to improve their own countries or even the world?  What else do students gain from studying abroad?

像阿巴这样的女性在留学过程中所获良多。她们学到的,除了是研究领域内实实在在的知识,还有什么有利于她们为祖国甚至世界作贡献?留学生除了专业知识以外还能在国外学到什么?
