(World Economic Forum: Report on Gender Equality) - 美国马尾妹 - 花旗国的半边天

Every year, the World Economic Forum releases its report on gender equality throughout the world.  One of the main goals and results of the report on gender equality is to empower women through the statistics.  Furthermore, many researchers, students, organizations, and governments use the data gathered by the World Economic Forum to use as benchmarks for initiating change on both domestic and international levels.  The report also points out that some countries are greatly advanced in their attempts to create a gender-equal society, despite their country’s general lack of resources.  The opposite is also true; some countries, despite their economic prosperity, are severely unsatisfactory in promoting gender equality.  The data compiled by the World Economic Forum reflects a six-year period, and the reports demonstrate each country’s track record in either improving gender equality, or in failing to make changes.

The study ranks countries based on four different categories: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.  In 2011, 135 countries were included in the gender equality report.  For that year, the top 10 most gender-equal countries were: Iceland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, New Zealand, Denmark, the Philippines, Lesotho, and Switzerland.  The countries ranked the lowest for gender equality were: Yemen, Chad, Pakistan, Mali, Saudi Arabia, C?te d’Ivoire, Morocco, Benin, Oman, and Nepal.

The information collected by the World Economic Forum helps to paint a picture of which countries need the most work to improve opportunities and conditions for women.  However, it does not provide a concrete answer as to how to increase equality for women, either within a certain country, or worldwide.

Discussion Questions

With this information, people and governments have an idea of what needs improvement.  However, because there are no suggestions as to how, what do you think can be done with this data?  How should governments, organizations, and other people use this information to influence change?
