(The Importance of Primal Health) - 美国马尾妹 - 花旗国的半边天

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by Dr. Michael Odent, who is famous for his groundbreaking work in promoting natural birth.  Natural birth refers to a birth without the intervention of drugs, episiotomy, equipment (vacuum extraction, forceps), or surgery (c-section).  Natural birth reinforces a woman’s power to birth her own babies, rather than have them “delivered” by someone else.  One of his most notable contributions to women’s studies is the foundation of the Primal Health Research Center. Primal Health Research investigates the connection between the “primal period” (fetal life up until the year following birth) and a person’s health and personality later on in life.  Although Dr. Odent’s theories and research were once considered controversial, modern medicine has made many advances that substantiate the importance of a person’s primal period.

Dr. Odent pointed out that over thousands of years of civilization, humans have slowly taken away from the natural process of pregnancy.  For example, when a woman gives birth, many times the baby will be taken from her for various reasons, such as being cleaned and measured.  However, research has demonstrated that it is critical for mothers and newborns to connect immediately after birth.  Many of the problems that modern mothers face, such as painful delivery, problems with the maternal/child bond, and the inability to breastfeed stem from unnatural processes and the introduction of synthetic drugs during labor and delivery.  For example, women who feel watched and stressed during childbirth cannot release oxytocin, often referred to as the “love” hormone that naturally reduces pain, increases bonding, and promotes successful breastfeeding.

Much of what Dr. Odent covered seemed shocking at first, especially growing up in a time when many people believe that medical intervention is the solution to every problem.  However, with a pregnant sister, I took much of what Dr. Odent said to heart.  Humans are the only creatures to try to change natural processes through cultural and medical advances.  Even with advances in modern medicine, many diseases and disorders continue to plague babies throughout the world.  As Dr. Odent’s research reaches more people, and as more women understand the value of natural, uninhibited birth, many of the problems people face later in their lives may be eliminated.

Discussion Questions

Do you think that a medical model that pushes intervention in the form of introducing labor inducing drugs, epidurals, and C-sections has negatively influenced women’s ideas and feelings toward pregnancy?  How can women choose to have a more natural birth when the rates of labor induction, epidurals, and C-sections are going up?
