优雅的代价:高跟鞋带来的健康隐患 (Unhealthy Elegance: The Health Risks of High-heeled Shoes) - 美国马尾妹 - 花旗国的半边天

What is the price women are willing to pay for their shoes? Although an eye-popping price tag at the shoe store may be the first thing to come to mind, health professionals believe that it is the toll shoes take on women's health, not their wallets, that bares attention. Studies have repeatedly shown that high-heeled shoes, unquestionably the favorite of women when dressing up both for work and play, pose serious health risks when worn regularly.

High heels are widely considered the most elegant of footwear for women; they add a few inches to a woman's height, have a slimming effect on her calves, and give a graceful tilt to her foot and ankle. However, while heels may look pretty, the long term effects they have on women's feet, legs, and back are anything but. The elevation of the heel forces an unnatural amount of pressure on the ball of the foot, which over time, can cause unsightly deformation of the foot. Many women develop hammer toes (toes that are permanently bent at the joint) after years of cramming their toes with pressure that is normally spread more evenly across the entire foot. Bunions are another common affliction for women who regularly wear heels. Bunions, an enlargement of the bone and tissue at the joint connecting the big toe to the foot, are caused by the double stress of extra pressure and the constant irritation of shoes rubbing against the joint. Beyond being unattractive, both hammer toes and bunions can be very painful and nearly impossible to correct without the intervention of foot surgery.

Though not as visible as foot deformations, the damage done to women's leg tendons by long-term heel wearing is an even more serious side effect of these elegantly deadly shoes. Leg tendons are flexible and stretch to allow the foot to alternate between flat and pointed positions. High heels, by elevating the foot, shorten the tendon. When women wear high heels regularly, the tendon adjusts to the elevation and the tendon gradually becomes short and less able to stretch. Accordingly, women who wear high-heeled shoes more than a few times a week often experience leg pain even when they are not wearing heels because the leg tendon becomes unable to stretch as easily. The damage to leg tendons is usually irreversible and can lead to back pain because women unconsciously bend their lower backs to compensate for shortened tendons, eventually damaging the nerves there as well.

Every once in a while, a newspaper or a TV talk show will run a feature on the health risks of high heels. Health professionals regularly urge women to wear heels more sparingly. Because of this publicity, most women know that wearing high heels isn't doing their feet any good. Nonetheless, although one in three women report experiencing some or all of these health problems inflicted by high heels, one in ten still wear heels three or more days every week. Clearly women are willing to disregard their health for the sake of the aesthetic appeal of heels.

Because of this, some health experts are shifting their energy away from discouraging women from wearing heels altogether and focusing instead on urging them to at least wear them in a more health conscious way. If women are not willing to abandon their favorite pairs of heels, they should try to reserve them for special occasions and wear more sensible and feet-friendly shoes as often as possible. They should also be extremely careful in choosing the size of high-heeled shoes because ill-fitting heels only exacerbate the inherent problems of these shoes. High heels have become such an ingrained element of women's fashion that it is unrealistic to hope that women will universally reject this unhealthy but elegant form of footwear. However, as some health experts are beginning to realize, by educating women about the health risks of heels and the ways to minimize them, it is possible to diminish the severity of the health risk posed by these shoes.
