For many years, tattoos and the people that got them were considered to be outside of the limits of social acceptability. Tattoos were most frequently worn by motorcyclists, criminals, gang members, and people looking to rebel against conventional social norms. Over the past few decades, however, tattoo art has gradually become more socially acceptable and has, to a certain extent, merged into mainstream culture. Today, forty percent of Americans between the ages of eighteen and twenty-nine have at least one tattoo and tattoo art has been the subject of museum and gallery exhibitions across the country. Women, who in the past very rarely got tattoos, make up a significant portion of the growing clientele of tattoo parlors and studios. In fact, middle-class suburban women are the fastest growing demographic group with tattoos.

Because of the surge in the number of women that want tattoos, women are currently almost as likely to get a tattoo as men are: thirteen percent of women and fifteen percent of men have at least one tattoo. Overall, women are more likely to be discreet about their tattoos, generally getting small tattoos in inconspicuous places that are easily covered by clothing. However, that trend is changing too; in recent years, tattoo parlors and studios have reported a rise in the number of women getting larger tattoos in highly visible places. It is difficult to identify any one reason for tattoos' growing popularity among women, but many believe that tattoos have become a source of female empowerment. For some women, getting a tattoo is a means of taking ownership of their bodies and making a statement about their personal identity. Selecting tattoos that carry personal significance makes them feel special and different while allowing them to externally represent their inner identity. Other women see their tattoos as a sign of gender equality, insisting that if it's socially acceptable for men to have tattoos, it should be for them as well. Still others simply like the way tattoos look and choose tattoos without worrying about making statements about their own identity or gender equality. Whatever their motivation, it is clear that many women are ready to take advantage of tattoos' growing social acceptability.

(Discussion Question: Do you agree that tattoos can be a powerful means of self-expression?)
