Until a few decades ago, in the United States homosexuality was a taboo topic. It was only spoken of in hushed whispers and many gay and lesbian individuals felt pressured to hide their sexuality for fear of public discrimination and familial judgement. Today, many are still uncomfortable with homosexuality and there are still abundant examples of social and legal discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, thanks in part to a thriving gay rights movement, attitudes are slowly shifting and American society is gradually becoming more tolerant of sexual diversity.

According to a recent study by the think tank Third Way, the American public has become notably more supportive of gay and lesbian rights. 64 percent of Americans currently believe that relationships between gay and lesbian adults should be legal, a 20 percent increase from 1996. Similarly, 58 percent of Americans believe that gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to marry, up 26 percent from 1996. The percentage of the U.S. population living in a state or locality that has relationship recognition laws has risen from 5 to 46 percent. While all of these statistics are encouraging for supporters of gay and lesbian rights, they still clearly indicate significant resistance to the gay and lesbian rights movement when the flip side of each statistic is considered. 36 percent of Americans believe homosexual relationships should be illegal, 42 percent do not support same-sex marriage, and 54 percent do not live in an area with relationship recognition laws.

The National Organization for Women, one of the most prominent groups in the American women's movement, maintains that “a woman's right to her own person includes the right to define and express her own sexuality and to choose her own lifestyle.” This support is echoed by many other women's rights groups. However, because lesbians are frequently treated as a subgroup within women's rights groups and because gay rights are not universally supported by women, lesbians often prefer to operate separately from broadly focused women's rights groups. Because the discrimination they face is more often because of their sexual orientation than their gender in and of itself, their interests and experiences are closer to those who suffer discrimination for the same reasons. Accordingly, the lesbian rights movement is generally part of a larger movement known as the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) movement. This movement focuses on issues and concerns shared by sexual orientation minority groups, such as promoting same-sex marriage and fighting negative media depictions of members of the LGBT community.

As the Third Way report suggests, the LGBT movement has made a lot of progress in recent years. Nonetheless, it is undeniable that there is still widespread sexuality-based discrimination, meaning that it is extremely important that the movement not lose its momentum.
