太美还是不够美:女名人所面对的外貌审查 (Too Pretty or Not Pretty Enough: Female Celebrities Face Constant Scrutiny of their Appearances) - 美国马尾妹 - 花旗国的半边天

Many people dream of being more like their favorite celebrities. The fame, the beauty, the wealth-- it all seems undeniably appealing. However, for female celebrities in particular, there are many pitfalls that lurk beneath the apparent perks of celebrity. Celebrity culture in the U.S. exposes female celebrities to expectations and difficulties that are not typically shared by their male counterparts.

Both male and female celebrities are often regarded as sex icons-- paragons of physical beauty admired and desired by much of the society. For all celebrities this sort of attention can be both a blessing and a burden: many celebrities purposefully use their sex appeal to their advantage, but some find that being labelled a sex icon can make it difficult to be taken seriously within their profession. It is particularly difficult for female celebrities to separate this label from their professional careers. I recently read an article in Vanity Fair about up-and-coming actress Emma Stone and was struck by the author's comment that Stone is “determined to define herself as something other than sexy”. As this comment suggests, Stone and other actresses like her have to make a conscious effort to prevent themselves from being seen as nothing more than pretty faces. More often than not, their appearance receives more attention than their talents, which necessitates the sort of careful self-definition that Stone seeks. Interestingly enough, despite the author's recognition of Stone's desire to avoid making “a career out of mere sex appeal,” the article's accompanying photos all depict the actress posed alluringly in bathing suits-- even as the article lauds Stone's ambition, it still plays off of her sex appeal.

In part because of this cultural emphasis on their role as sex icons, female celebrities fall under an immense amount of pressure to continue to live up to unforgiving standards of ideal feminine beauty. Tabloid magazines have regular features about celebrities who have put on weight, complete with embarrassing photos of these celebrities in bathing suits or unflattering outfits that showcase the extra pounds. The celebrities targeted by these sort of articles are almost always female; men male celebrities are rarely targeted for their weight. To avoid the embarrassment of being ridiculed for their weight, many female celebrities resort to extreme measures such as anorexic eating habits or surgery in order to preserve the impeccable appearance that society seems to expect. In what seems to be a particularly unfair fashion, the same tabloid magazines that blast female celebrities for gaining weight feel no qualms about mocking them if they resort to surgery or about using their eating disorders to sell more issues. Both male and female celebrities are constantly in the public eye, but for women this attention is more detrimental because their physical appearance is relentlessly scrutinized. This scrutiny is a double-edged sword for most female celebrities-- if they look good, they encounter difficulties escaping the trap of the sex icon label, yet if they look bad, they face public humiliation.

讨论:你认为女名人在外表方面所承受的压力比男名流大吗? (Discussion Question: Do you think that the pressure faced by female celebrities regarding their physical appearance is greater than that faced by their male counterparts?)
