Until relatively recently, it was conventional for young men of the upper classes to take a “Grand Tour” of Europe after completing their formal education. The Tour was seen as a means of providing young men with cultural education and refinement through contact with great works of art and architecture and different cultures. The benefits of such travel were not only closed to men of the lower classes who could not afford such an expensive journey, but also largely closed to women, regardless of whether they were rich or poor. Women generally had very few opportunities to do the sort of traveling that was considered a rite of passage for men. When they did travel, it was socially mandated that they be accompanied by a chaperone. However, as women have gained more social and economic freedom over time, the incredible experiences available through travel have become more and more accessible to them. Today, many women enjoy the independence of traveling alone, something that would have been inconceivable a century ago.

According to one survey, sixty-eight percent of American women have travelled alone. While some women have qualms about traveling alone, be it because of safety concerns or simply the desire for a companion, many of these women who travel alone have found it to be a uniquely rewarding experience. Evelyn Hannon created the site “Journeywoman: The Premier Travel Resource For Women” (www.journeywoman.com) to share information and advice with women travelers after discovering the wonders of travel on a solo trip across Europe. On that trip, she discovered that traveling alone gave her more freedom and made her more open to new experiences and encounters than traveling with companions. She admits that traveling alone can at times be lonely, but she believes that the benefits of solo travel more than compensate for the occasional feelings of loneliness. She now describes herself as “a woman who refuses to be timid and who has learned, by trial and error, the benefits of solo travel” and is eager to share her experiences with other women.

A sizable portion of Hannon's website is devoted to providing women with safety tips for traveling alone because it is unfortunately true that a lone female traveler faces more obstacles than a male one does. The number of challenges that a woman faces when traveling are largely dependent on her destination. Wherever a woman goes, it is necessary that she take precautions about walking alone at night and be alert for pickpockets and possible assailants. However, there are also certain places that women must be very conscious about how they dress and act because the local cultures have different values regarding women's social behavior and modesty. Hannon does not believe that this necessary awareness should deter women from visiting these destinations. Rather, she advises that women be respectful of local cultures and dress modestly in muted colors to avoid attracting unwanted attention. While women may have to be more alert and cautious than men, if they take the necessary precautions, there is no reason that they cannot enjoy the freedom and amazing experiences that come with traveling alone.

讨论:你认为女性独自旅行,利大还是弊大? (Discussion Question: Do you think that the benefits or obstacles of women traveling by themselves are greater?)
