妇女在技术领域的新机遇 (New Opportunities for Women in Technology) - 美国马尾妹 - 花旗国的半边天

Earlier this year, the United Nations declared internet access to be a human right and urged nations across the world to make ensuring universal internet access a priority. The UN's report indicated how integral technology has become in modern society and affirmed what a powerful tool it can be for creating change and new opportunities. Because of technology's amazing potential, a new program called TechWomen is trying to empowering women through the use of technology.

The TechWomen program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State, was announced by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2010 and the program officially began this year. The program seeks to encourage emerging female leaders in technological fields in the Middle East and Northern Africa, where opportunities for women are often limited. TechWomen program pairs these women with mentors who are American women with established careers in technology. Earlier this year, the American mentors hosted their mentees for the first part of a two-way exchange. Mentors found or created projects for their mentees to work on at their companies. Projects generally focused on research, product testing, or the support of a preexisting team and helped mentees to develop technological skills and forge contacts with female role models. Later this year, the mentors will visit their mentees in their home countries to complete the second portion of the exchange.

Although the primary focus of the program is to provide Middle Eastern and North African women with new technological skills, it also serves the important function of connecting women across the world with each other. It is able to forge cross-cultural connections by building upon the universal appeal and utility of technology. Because of the dual success of this fledging program, the State Department is currently planning a similar program for younger women. This program will offer teenage girls the opportunity to travel to the U.S. to participate in a month-long educational program focused on technology. Hopefully, with programs like TechWomen and TechGirls, more women will be able to develop the scientific and technical background so important in modern life and will be connected with their counterparts across the world in the process.

讨论:你认为科技女性这个项目的哪个方面对女性有最大的好处?

(Discussion Question: What do you think is the most beneficial aspect of the TechWomen program?)
