美国女大学生善用悠长暑假 (Schools Out For Summer: College Women Take Advantage of Long Summer Breaks) - 美国马尾妹 - 花旗国的半边天

Most American universities function on a two-semester system: students go to school for a fall semester (which generally lasts from late August to early December) and then a spring semester (from January to mid-May).  This system gives students a long summer break of almost three months.  Students choose to use this time in different ways: some choose to take extra classes, others travel with their friends or family, and many work summer jobs.  Some people argue that long summer breaks are academically detrimental because students forget too much of what they’ve learned over the summer months, but most students appreciate the time off from classes and the break from their usual school year schedules.

Although many students enjoy the break from the stress and work of classes, some students choose to take extra classes over the summer to catch up or get ahead on their coursework.  Whereas students usually take around five classes during the school year, they can take as few classes over the summer as they like, allowing them to focus more intensely on these classes.  One of my friends is required to take one semester of Physics for her major in Biochemistry.  Because Chemistry is her strength, she was worried that Physics would be too challenging to take during the regular school year.  So, she decided to take it over the summer at a college near her home so that she wouldn't have to worry about other classes at the same time.  Many students make similar decisions in order to get challenging requirements out of the way.

A lot of students take advantage of the time off from school to travel.  In particular, the tradition of “Beach Week” is popular among college students.  The first week after their classes end, many students rent beach houses or hotels with their friends and spend the week celebrating the start of summer.  Although Beach Week has become enshrined as a college tradition, many students do other sorts of travel over the long break as well.  Study abroad programs are popular among American students, but many are unable to spend an entire semester abroad because of academic requirements.  As a result, many students participate in special summer programs that allow them to experience studying abroad without devoting an entire semester to it.  One of my friends recently arrived in Tanzania, where she's spending part of the summer with a group from school on a mixed academic, mixed service trip.  She is majoring in engineering so she has a very strict academic program during the regular school year and would not have been able to take a semester off; the long break gives her the opportunity to travel and study abroad as she would have been unable to with a shorter amount of time off school.

Some students work jobs during the regular school year, but others find it too hard to juggle the stress and time commitment of classes and a job at the same time.  Whether they work jobs during the school year or not, most students try to earn extra money over the break by working summer jobs.  Many try to find internships with government agencies or companies that relate to their program of study.  Unfortunately, the selection process for internships is usually very competitive and many internships are nonpaying.  As a result, many students are perfectly happy to work paying jobs in retail or food service even though they do not correspond with their studies.  The greatest hurdle for students looking for these sorts of summer jobs is that many businesses are reluctant to hire new employees for only a few months.  Businesses are likely to hire applicants that can work for a longer period of time instead of students seeking temporary summer employment.  Because of this challenge, some students choose to forgo traditional employment altogether and try to make money on their own by babysitting, tutoring, or working odd jobs.

For most students, despite the extra studying and working, the summer break is still first and foremost a time for fun.  It is a chance to catch up with old friends, to enjoy the warm summer weather by the pool, and to simply relax.  As critical as some people are of the length of university summer breaks, it is the amount of time that students have off that allows them to fit in work, study, and play all into one summer.
