Up until the second half of the twentieth century, many American colleges and universities refused to admit women. To give women the educational opportunities that were denied them by these exclusively male institutions, several all-women's colleges were founded. As time passed and women's movements gained influence in the country, traditionally male-exclusive colleges became more and more pressured to accept women into their ranks. As a result, most American colleges are currently coeducational. However, there remains a small group of all-women's colleges that continue to prosper and annually attract female students. Today, women choose to go to these colleges not because they have no other choice, but because they believe that these colleges have better community atmospheres and educational opportunities for women than their coeducational counterparts have.

The Women's College Coalition is an association of women's colleges and universities founded in 1972 to promote all-female institution and to help these colleges remain relevant as traditionally all-male colleges became coeducational. According to the WCC's website, women's colleges continue to provide valuable educational opportunities for young women. In particular, the association asserts that women's colleges are beneficial in helping women break into the traditionally male-dominated fields of science, math, and technology. According to the association's director, Susan E. Lennon, women's colleges graduate one and a half times as many women in these fields as coeducational institutions. Students in these fields at women's colleges receive more support and encouragement than students at coeducational colleges because their colleges are more dedicated to providing educational experiences best suited to female students' needs. Additionally, because most faculty and top administration positions are filled by women, students have more interaction with positive female role models. Overall, Lennon and other members of the WCC argue, women's colleges provide a more enriching college experience for female students and produce students that are more engaged and prepared for life outside of college.

I attend a coeducational university and have always found the experience of attending a college with both men and women to be a very positive one. I used to wonder if women who attended women's colleges would actually be well-prepared for life after college because it seemed to me that they were learning in a somewhat artificial environment. In the workforce, most women will be working with men as well as women. However, after reading some of the WCC's literature, I can see how attending an exclusively female institution could be beneficial for some women. I think the most important thing is that women can now choose for themselves whether or not women's colleges are right for them. They can choose the educational experience that suits them best, whereas in the past, they had to accept what limited educational opportunities were available to them.

Discussion Question: What are the benefits of attending an all-women's college? Are there any drawbacks?

就读女子学院有什么优点或缺点?
