家庭暴力:大部分受害者是女性 (Domestic Violence: Most Victims Are Female) - 美国马尾妹 - 花旗国的半边天

Unfortunately, domestic violence is a very real and prevalent problem in the United States. According to the American Bar Association, every year approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner. As this statistic demonstrates, women are victims much more frequently than men are. Indeed, 84% of spousal abuse victims and 86% of dating abuse victims are female. Statistics such as these effectively provide a conception of the shocking prevalence of domestic violence, but they fail to provide an idea of the extreme pain and suffering caused by each individual instance. Last May, a tragic murder that took place at my school made me confront the true horror of domestic violence as no statistic ever could.

Only weeks before she was supposed to graduate, Yeardley Love, a varsity lacrosse player at my school, was brutally murdered by her ex-boyfriend, George Huguely. During the murder investigation, evidence of past abuse began to surface. While they were dating, Huguely reportedly physically assaulted Love on multiple occasions and following their break-up, he sent her angry and threatening emails. At the candlelight vigil organized to honor Love's memory that I attended, it struck me that in addition to sorrow at Love's death, the community felt a profound sense of remorse that measures that could have been taken to prevent the tragic event had not been taken. Huguely had previous criminal charges for violent behavior, but officials at the University were unaware of them because the incidents took place off of school grounds and there was no system in place that required such incidents to be reported to the University. Even more unfortunately, no one close to Love or Huguely who would have been aware of his violent behavior towards her spoke out about the danger she was in. The University's director of sexual and domestic violence services, though saddened by the silence surrounding Huguely's violence prior to Love's death, did not think it was uncommon. ABC News reports that she said, “There's so many reasons why people don't speak up. They're afraid of the consequences. The most silent victims of domestic violence are teenagers and young adults.”

Because the silence surrounding incidents of domestic violence is one of the primary reasons that tragedies such as Yeardley Love's death are not prevented, movements to fight domestic violence aim to end this silence. This past week, my school sponsored events for Take Back the Night (TBTN), an international foundation that seeks to end domestic violence by raising awareness. Throughout the week, the TBTN organization held events such as self-defense classes, a mock sexual assault trial, and a rally and vigil, all designed to end silence about domestic violence and make people aware of the resources available to victims. I think that events such as these are extremely important in the fight against domestic violence because by raising awareness, they encourage people to be more individually responsible for ending the silence. Hopefully as people become more aware of the facts of domestic violence, they will realize that by remaining silent they become complicit in the violence. I know that after the tragedy of Yeardley Love's death I would never dream of being a silent witness to domestic violence. I can only hope that others feel the same way.
